Its a Mall World After All

White Plains is retail. There are several shopping malls here; indeed the big story of development in White Plains over the past two decades is the enclosed malls - The Galleria, The Westchester, and The Westchester Pavilion. In the dark ages (circa 1960), Mamaroneck Avenue was known as the golden mile for the upscale, quality retailers that lined the street. Today, Mamaroneck Avenue running south from Main is mostly discount stores struggling to survive. Most shoppers drive their car into one of the garages attached to the indoor malls and shop in air conditioned comfort at the Gap, Victoria Secret, Sears, Macy's, H&M, Crate & Barrel, Nordstrom's, Neiman Marcus, Armani Exchange, Foot Locker, Old Navy, Williams and Sonoma, Eddie Bauer, Abercrombie & Fitch, Target, Filene's Basement, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Office Depot, The Sports Authority, Lenscrafters and Radio Shack.

And there is more to shopping here than multinational conglomerates selling worthless shine to suburbanites. On Mamaroneck Avenue, there's Sam Ash musical instruments. Around the corner on Post Road, The Westchester Road Runner sells the right stuff for your triathlon training. Pedigree Ski Shop offers the right ski gear and tennis equipment (don't miss their tent sales). During the summer months, the city sponsors a farmer's market each Wednesday near city hall.

AN OLDIE BUT A GOODIE

There is another mall in Whit plains that Ssome people may have fotgotten. The White Plains Mall was the first mall in White Plains and although it is bit outdated there are a number of small stores that a worth a visit.
